Meet Our Judges

Kenneth Bauman - Whitetails

Kenneth owns a taxidermy studio in Anadarko, OK, where he has done taxidermy since 1989. He is very active in the OKTA, and has served as their president for the past 4 years. Kenneth is an extremely talented taxidermist and judge. He has competed for years and been very successful at the highest level, including 2 Breakthrough awards, 3 Master of Master awards, 5 State Champion awards, the National Award of Excellence in 2005, two time National Champion, and his first Best in World title in 2009. Kenneth has judged everything from fish, reptiles, reproductions, and whitetails. In addition to judging multiple state competitions this year, Kenneth will also be judging the Eastern Regionals. We are fortunate to have Kenneth on our panel of judges this year.

 

Kent Reedy - Birds

With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Kent Reedy is known as one of the best bird taxidermists and instructors in the nation. Kent became involved in taxidermy at the early age of 16, and has developed that interest into the successful school he operates today. Kent has won numerous Best of show awards at State competitions. In 1987 Kent won Best in World, as well as Best of Show at the World Taxidermy Championships. He followed that up with a Master of Masters win in the 1995 WTC. Kent is a great teacher and judge, and has judged State, National, International, and World competitions, including a trip to Europe in 2008 to judge the World Taxidermy Championships in Salzburg, Austria. We look forward to having Kent on our 2010 panel of judges.

 

Manny Chavez - Gameheads/Mammals

For the past 13 years, Manny has owned and operated Artistic Wildlife Studio in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Manny started doing taxidermy over 21 years ago, and has become a prominent name in the industry. Manny has won major awards at the State, Regional, National, and World levels, including National Champion in 2002, and the National Award of Excellence in 2004. Manny has judged numerous state shows, the Southern Regionals, and in 2006 he was a judge at the World Taxidermy Championships in Reno Nevada. Manny is a lot of fun, and gives a great critique. We welcome him to our panel of judges.

 

Randy Pike - Fish/Amateur

Randy is one of our founding members of the MTA, and has been a judge for several MTA shows. While normally Randy handles the Amateur judging, this year he will be doing the fish judging as well. Randy has been a taxidermist for 33 years, and is an expert in all areas of taxidermy. In 1988 Randy won a Best in World with a yellow perch. He has also earned a Second in World short hair whitetail. Randy has done a lot for the taxidermy community, and for the MTA. He is well known for his talent as a judge and teacher, and has the natural ability to help taxidermists understand when critiquing a piece. Randy is our fourth and final judge, in an impressive lineup of judges.

Seminars
 

Kenneth Bauman - Setting Whitetail Eyes and Ears

Kenneth will be demonstrating his methods for prepping a whitetail form for mounting. This seminar will cover everything from facial anatomy, selecting and setting the eyes, earliners, and building ear butts. Kenneth will also discuss common problem areas with whitetail taxidermy. This should be a great seminar for beginners and seasoned taxidermists alike. Length: 2 hours

 

Kent Reedy - Ringneck Pheasant Heads and Wattles

Kent has an exciting new way of handling pheasant wattles, and the challenges they bring. Sit in and watch Kent demonstrate his unique method of mounting a pheasant head from start to finish. Kent will go over some important anotomical features of a ringneck, then set the eyes and mount the head. Length: 2 hrs.

 

Manny Chavez - Mounting a Pronghorn Antelope

Manny is well known as a Pronghorn expert, and in this seminar Manny will mount an antelope from start to finish, covering everything from eye set, ear butts, horn care, anatomy and key features to remember of Pronghorns. Length: 3 hrs.

 

Randy Pike - Fish Anatomy

Randy plans to bring in fish from the competition room, as well as possibly bringing one of his own, to discuss important anatomical features of fish, and explain time-tested methods of correcting common mistakes when mounting them. Randy may also touch on habitats, and displaying your fish for competition. Feel free to fire away with any fish related questions you may have! Length: 2 hrs.

 

Cindy Cunningham - Habitat
(Rock, Snow, and Water Effects)

Cindy owns/operates Second Creation Taxidermy in Kansas City, KS where not only does she have a full-line taxidermy studio, but aslo a full-line taxidermy school. Cindy will show her methods of creating realistic snow and water effects, as well as show how she uses Quick Rock in her displays. This informative seminar comes courtesy of the United Taxidermists Association. Length: 2 hrs.

 

Garland Lessley - Casting Reproduction Antlers

Garland will continue his on-going series of seminars on molding and casting antlers with this year's demonstration. Garland will briefly discuss his method of making a latex mold, then he will prep that mold and cast a set of reproduction Mule Deer antlers. Garland will also show his method of coloring reproduction antlers on another cast, and he will generously offer these replicas up for sale at the auction Saturday night. If you have any intrest at all in using reproduction antlers, this is a must see. Length: 2 hrs.

 

Devin Amelunke - Mounting a Small Mammal Pedestal

Devin owns/operates Ozark Mountains Taxidermy in southeast MO. He is an expert gamehead, bird, mammal and fish taxidermist who has been successfully competing at the highest levels for years. He's won multiple Wasco Awards, multiple best of categories, and multiple Best overall taxidermist awards. We are fortunate enough to have Devin demonstrate his methods of mounting something that seems to really be growing in popularity...the small mammal pedestal. Length: 2 hrs.

Tom Strother - MDC Rules and Regulations Q & A

Tom will be joing us from the MO Department of Conservation and going over some wildlife rules and regulations as they pertain to taxidermists. Tom plans on speaking briefly about the MDC, and to address some new regulations. He will then open it up for a question and answer session with those in attendance. If you have any questions or concerns for the department, this would be a great time to ask. Length: 2 hrs.
